Author Interview: Kidlio Mag - Meet Our Fabulous Author Lotus Kay

Q: First tell us something about yourself?

I’m a 21-year-old, writer, musician, activist, and author of a children’s book series that I started at 16.

Q: How and when did your journey start as a writer?

I always was a writer. And so were my parents and some of my other family members, so it comes naturally.

Q: When did you write your first story? Is it published or not?

When I was 7 I started writing short stories in my room. I would read them to my family and that’s when I said I wanted to be an author someday – but not any author, specifically a children’s book author.

STORY MONSTERS INTERVIEW: “LOTUS KAY Shows Young Readers That Friends Really Can Lift You Up”

At the age of 21, Lotus Kay is establishing herself as a successful writer, singer, and songwriter. Each of those talents could lead to separate careers, but Kay is giving voice to each.

“I tend to work on whatever I am feeling inspired to work on that day, unless I have a deadline I need to meet,” she said. “I am always writing something, whether it is on a song, a book, or ideas for an article or video or just adding quotes or ideas in my notes. Writing is my natural way of processing my experiences, so it is like breathing to me. It’s something I can’t not do!"

Hudson Valley One - “A new spin on Thanksgiving, from a young Woodstock children’s book author”

The day of giving thanks and post-harvest feasting before the long, dark winter, is almost upon us. Thanksgiving has evolved from a colonial myth into an American institution that centers around food, festivity, family and fowl. It’s Rockwellian representations often include that huge turkey on a platter, its buttery skin glistening from oven-baked heat, cranberry sauce and butternut squash topped off with pumpkin or pecan pie.

The meta-narrative of Thanksgiving and “peace-offerings” between Indigenous People and European settlers is slowing but surely being disrupted and allowing for a plethora of new voices, new ways of celebrating to enter onto the buffet table.

One of these strands has been woven beautifully by the 20-year-old writer, author, environmentalist, Lotus Kay of Woodstock, who recently read from her children’s book, “A Thanksgiving for the Turkeys,” at the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, for a live story hour where she was flanked by rescued turkeys on either side of her perch by the barn.

World Oceans Day features an announcement about Billie the Octopus

With World Oceans Day coming Wednesday, June 8 (2022), the children’s book Billie the Octopus (Eifrig Publishing) invites young ones to explore the wonders of the oceans, become aware of the threats to it, and how they can help make a difference in a watery world that covers 97% of the earth’s livable habitat.

Billie the Octopus is told in charming rhyme and colorful graphics that show a world beneath the sea that is in danger from humans. Filled with Plastic Facts: did you know that “8 million tons of plastic enters our oceans from the land each year?” and suggestions “instead of using plastic water bottles get a reusable one, don’t use plastic straws,” and many others, even the earliest readers will find these facts and recommendations fascinating and concerning. JENNY THE CHIMPANZEE REVIEWED IN READERS' FAVORITE

Screen%2BShot%2B2021-04-14%2Bat%2B2.21.32%2BPM.jpg

Reviewed by Tammy Ruggles for Readers' Favorite

Jenny the Chimpanzee by Lotus Kay is a wonderfully engaging children's book about Jenny, a chimpanzee who helps young audiences learn about evolution and history. Jenny is the one explaining things, and will immediately bring young readers into the story. But there is more than text. The narrative rhymes make it fun to read and easy for children to learn. There are also important, inspiring quotes by the famous environmentalist and chimpanzee expert, Dr. Jane Goodall. There is plenty for children to be excited about in the story, and parents will like it too--the message of how humans and wildlife are connected on earth and that, human or chimp, caring for one another is of utmost importance.

The author offers an irresistible combination of rhyme, story, message, and illustrations by Chey Diehl. This book is actually the most recent in the Bears for Cares series of books, a campaign launched by Kay and her sister Jazmin as a Jane Goodall-based project for Endangered Species Day. The campaign hopes to bring attention to wildlife and our planet through education and books like Jenny the Chimpanzee. But perhaps more than that, the book hopes to show even young readers that they can play a part in making the world a better place for every living creature. The message seems to be that caring is the first step to making improvements. The message is relevant, the illustrations are charming, and it's great to find Jane Goodall featured prominently. Jenny the Chimpanzee by Lotus Kay is a lovely story about interconnectedness and caring, and would be a terrific addition to any book club or children's library.

"It is amazing to step back and look at our world. The magnificent beasts, astounding creatures of every size. We turn each page with smiles and wonders, only then to discover our dangerous blunders. If we're not careful, our beautiful paradise may be lost. Truly an eye-opener to what wonders we have that often slip our attention. So often, we don't know what we have until it's gone."
